International Women's Day 2023 - Stefi, Olga & Fatima

International Women's Day 2023 - Stefi, Olga & Fatima

International Women's Day is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It is also a day to reflect on the ongoing struggle and conversations around inequality, and recognize the challenges women face in society.

In this article, we will hear from three of our colleagues Fatima, Olga and Stefi what International Women's Day means to them, the biggest challenges women face today, and who inspires them.

Stefi

“One of the things that I enjoy the most is being surrounded by nature. I believe it is one of the most precious things we have and we should cherish and care. I support all sustainable initiatives, because I know this will bring us forward and it will allow future generations a brighter future.”

What does International Women's Day mean to you?

“For me, International Women's Day means celebrating all of our achievements in society. Also, it is a call to action for accelerating gender equality.

International Women's Day has its origins in the struggle for equal rights, the right to vote for women, and the emancipation of women workers."

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our society today in terms of equality?

“I would like to use this opportunity to talk to those women who cannot express their thoughts. Because I have the possibility to raise my voice, I feel grateful and privileged. I think that we have made huge progress in this battle we have for our rights. There is still a long way to go. One of the biggest challenges we have is access to equal opportunities.”

This time, I would like to show you some information about how women have less access to equal opportunities:

While the Internet and digital technology can open a world of opportunities to all users, they bring particular benefits to us. It allows us to learn, enter markets and earn income, and access critical information and services. This is particularly true today in the context of the global COVID-19 pandemic. These statements I mentioned from the UN above suggest that our voices are getting left out of the public conversations that the Internet was supposed to enable. It is important to recognize our achievements and increase their visibility while denouncing inequalities. If you can help a woman that is not as opportune as yourself, by: teaching her how to access the internet, showing her how to make a videocall, or helping her use Skype or Facebook, just to name a few, please do not miss your chance to change the world :)

Who has inspired you the most and/or still inspires you?

“I would like to give room to younger generations.  Greta Thunberg is a woman that really inspires me.
Greta Thunberg empowered the voices of all climate activists. She proved that the current generation is jeopardizing the future of the next generation regarding climate, and the next generation is now giving their word regardless of their age. Greta practices what she preaches, she is consistent, and this builds trust. She gives people hope. Honest, approachable, and hard-working are some of the characteristics that I love about Greta’s personality. Greta Thunberg should truly inspire us, women and girls, to believe in our capacity as agents of change and motivate us to fight for a better tomorrow.”

Olga

“I love to cook and love a very good meal. I love to spend time with my family and friends. Especially I love to celebrate almost all festivals like birthdays, carnivals, village fairs, barbecues, Halloween, New Year's Eve, and so on.”

What does International Women's Day mean to you?

“8th March for me means spring, gifts, lots of flowers, a good mood, delicious food, and champagne. In addition, March 8 is a day of respect for brave women who fight for their rights and emancipation.”

International Women's Day has its origins in the struggle for equal rights, the right to vote for women, and the emancipation of women workers. What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our society today in terms of equality?

“The biggest challenge for women in Germany today is patriarchy. Patriarchy has convinced people that a strong and intelligent woman is a problem.”

Who has inspired you the most and/or still inspires you?

“I am inspired by my mom and my grandma.”

Fatima

“Mostly sarcastic, less reasonable, more emotional human with a traveling passion.”

What does International Women's day mean to you?

“The voice of reason and struggle, of constant questioning of values, not accepting given paths.”

International Women's Day has its origins in the struggle for equal rights, the right to vote for women, and the emancipation of women workers. What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our society today in terms of equality?

“The greatest challenge is to achieve real equality that is not imposed and superficial, that is based on actions and not words. Accept that our strength does not lie in inequality but in the uniqueness of each of us, and that we don't have to lose our femininity in order to be equal.”

Who has inspired you the most and/or still inspires you?

“My dad, who has always been my absolute support and encouraged me to use my human uniqueness for the betterment. He taught me that the most important thing I can be and do when I grow up is to be a nice human, not male, not female, a human.“

International Women's Day is a day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women while also recognizing the challenges that women continue to face. As Steffi, Olga, and Fatima have highlighted, gender inequality is still prevalent in society, whether it is through a lack of access to equal opportunities or societal barriers such as patriarchy. It is inspiring to hear about their passions, inspirations, and what drives them to create a better future. However, women like Greta Thunberg, who is Stefi's inspiration, and the strong women in Olga's family serve as reminders that progress can be made and change can happen.  Let us all continue to celebrate and empower women, recognize the progress we have made, and work towards a more equal and just society for all. Remember, small actions can make a big difference, so let's use our unique strengths to bring about positive change and let us all reflect on the progress that has been made, celebrate the achievements of women, and recommit ourselves to the ongoing struggle for gender equality.
